Question 1

What is hexagonal thinking?

Accepted Answer

Hexagonal thinking is a structured concept-mapping technique where pupils arrange hexagonal tiles representing concepts. Touching edges mean a defensible link between the ideas. It exposes the connections inside a schema and is often used for retrieval, revision, and Socratic discussion.

Question 2

How do I use a hexagonal thinking activity in a Key Stage 2 classroom?

Accepted Answer

Generate 15 to 30 hexagons on your topic, print them or share the digital grid, ask pupils to arrange them so every touching edge shows a real connection, and require a one-sentence justification for each connection. Pair pupils and have them defend their layout. Total time: 20 to 35 minutes.

Question 3

Is hexagonal thinking evidence-based?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The underlying mechanism — making schema connections visible and forcing elaboration — is supported by cognitive science research on schema theory, elaborative interrogation, and retrieval practice. Chalk's Wiki entry on hexagon concept maps cites the evidence base in full.

Question 4

Can I edit the hexagons Chalk generates?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Every generated hexagon can be edited inline — change the term, switch the icon, recolour, or remove. You can also add your own hexagons manually or import from a list of terms.

Question 5

Is Chalk's hexagons tool free?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The tool is free for individual teachers with no card required. Free exports include a small "Made with Chalk" footer; Pro removes it and unlocks unlimited generations. Schools can buy seats from £36 per teacher per year.
