Question 1

What is retrieval practice?

Accepted Answer

Retrieval practice is any activity that requires pupils to recall information from memory without their notes. Examples include short quizzes, brain dumps, and concept-mapping. The act of retrieving — not the act of restudying — is what strengthens long-term memory.

Question 2

How often should I use retrieval tasks?

Accepted Answer

Daily or every-other-day, in short bursts. The evidence supports frequency and spacing over intensity: a 5-minute retrieval starter every lesson beats a 30-minute revision session once a fortnight.

Question 3

What's the difference between retrieval practice and testing?

Accepted Answer

Retrieval practice is low-stakes and formative — pupils get immediate feedback and the result doesn't go in a gradebook. Testing is summative. Both involve retrieval, but only low-stakes retrieval produces the long-term-memory benefit reliably.

Question 4

Will my pupils struggle? Is that bad?

Accepted Answer

Some struggle (around 80% accuracy) is optimal. If pupils get everything right, the material is too easy and the retrieval effect is weak. If they get almost everything wrong, the retrieval has nothing to strengthen. Aim for productive difficulty.

Question 5

Which retrieval format should I use?

Accepted Answer

Match-up: best for definitions and pairs. Mind map: best for relationships and breadth. Think and link: best for cause-and-effect. What's the story: best for narrative subjects. Example-or-not: best for surfacing misconceptions.
